Bird in Flight

Bird in Flight (Ukraine) is a good example of the fact that a photo agency can transform into a real media project. At first glance, BiF might look like a simple collection of links showing “The most interesting of the Internet,” but, in fact, it offers its own excellent reports and interviews that resonate with and attract the attention of hundreds of thousands of users.

Antijournalist

At “Antijournalist” (Belarus), the blogger and media analyst from Belarus Viktor Malishevskiy describes and dryly comments on official statistics published by official state media. A typical example: “Since the presidential election (December 2010) the average salary of a Belorussian citizen rose from 1,595,900 to 6,536,100 rubles – or from 531 dollars to 450 dollars.”

Takie dela

“Takie dela,” which translates to “such things,” is probably the first successful joint project in Russia conducted by a charity organization and a news outlet. Each journalistic investigation and report about children with rare diseases or women who suffered from domestic violence is supported by a campaign that aims to collect money for organizations dealing with that concrete social problem.

OVD-Info

“OVD Info” was launched by volunteers in 2011 as a means of quickly monitoring arrests during mass protests. It has evolved into a full-scale analytical project dealing with law enforcement issues in Russia. At the moment, “OVD-info” offers information about the latest arrests and house-searches, as well as expert reports on repression in Russia.

Prozhito

“Prozhito,” or “Lived,” is a unique historical project. It is an online database of thousands of digitalized Russian diaries written in the 20th century. You can find the notes of prominent people such as Prishvin to Babel, as well as those written by everyday Soviet citizens, public servants, students and soldiers. The diaries are sorted by author and date. This turns them into unique collections that depict historical events and provide a personal view of complicated questions like “What were Soviet citizens writing about in the last weeks before the start of the World War.”
