Blank Noise

Blank Noise started as an art action project in Bangalore, India, in 2003 to tackle the deeply entrenched, and often trivialized, problem of sexual harassment and violence against women in India’s public spaces. Founded by Jasmeen Patheja, the project bases its actions on data and testimonials from actual subjects, blends online and offline action to raise public awareness, empowers women to reclaim the right to move around safely in public and pushes for changes in attitudes and policy. Over 20 percent of the project’s volunteer are male, and Blank Noise has expanded to several cities.

Open Migration

This online project has two main aims: first, to use research and data to challenge misinformation about the many people currently fleeing their homes in search of refuge and, second, to promote and protect migrants’ rights. Open Migration achieves both these goals with its infographics, commentary, news reporting, feature stories and analysis.

Code for Africa

The open source tools it helped develop have been used in several countries across Africa – and other parts of the world.

Nuba Reports

This site aims to provide coverage of the civil war in the region of South Kordofan, which in spite of its allegiance to South Sudan, was left as part of Sudan’s territory when South Sudan became a separate nation in 2011. As journalists are banned from the Nuba Mountains region, Nuba Reports fills the gap in coverage by bringing together local journalists with professional editors and mentors to produce high-quality dispatches from the front lines of this severely underreported conflict.

Africa is a Country

Through analysis of current events, commentary, original writing, arts coverage, and by amplifying work that “complicates” the image of Africa, this transnational collective of academics, artists, and bloggers seeks to “challenge and destabilize received wisdom about the African continent and its people in Western media.” Africa is a Country also runs two related projects, an African music showcase called Africa is a Radio, and Football is a Country, which aims to present a more global take on world football.
